Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is a native North American plant that’s popular with pollinators. This pungently fragrant flowering plant is a member of the Asteraceae family. The herb is also native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere in Asia and Europe. Yarrow is frequently found in the mildly disturbed soil of grasslands and open forests. In New Mexico and southern Colorado, the plant is called plumajillo (Spanish for 'little feather') from its leaf shape and texture. In antiquity, Yarrow was known as herbal militaris, for its use in stanching the flow of blood from wounds. Yarrow has multiple medicinal uses.
Since stored seed is more difficult to germinate, direct sowing seeds in autumn brings the most success, as long as you experience temperatures of 40 degrees F or below for a good part of the winter.
Start yarrow from seeds indoors about 6-8 weeks before the last predicted frost. Sow the seeds in normal potting soil, and put the plant in a warm, sunny location. In about 14-21 days, the seeds will begin to germinate.
