Western Boneset
Ageratina occidentalis
(also known as Western snakeroot, Western eupatorium, Western joe pye weed)
zones 3-5
40 seeds
Western Boneset is found from central Washington, south along the east side of the Cascades to California, and eastward into Idaho and Utah. It grows in a variety of habitats including dry, rocky areas. This rhizomatous perennial has several stems which rise from a woody base. Stems are light green in color, often with purplish blotches. The flower heads are small, and clustered primarily at the end of the stems, and the flowers themselves are pink, reddish-purple, or sometimes white. 9-21 rayless composite flowers are found in each head. Western boneset flowers from August to September. The species is self-pollinating and is pollinated by insects.
Sow seed in early spring in a cold frame, only just covering the seed. When large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer.
