Tolme's Onion
Allium tolmiei
35 seeds
Allium tolmiei var. persimile (AKA Seven Devil's Onion) is a plant species native to Idaho, eastern and central Oregon, southeastern Washington, northwestern Nevada and northeastern California. It occurs on mountains and scrublands at elevations of 1,300–9,200 feet. It was discovered by and named for Dr. William Fraser Tolmie. Tolmie's Onion grows to 10 inches tall with one flowering stem, surmounted by a mass of small, pink flowers, which lighten as the blossom matures. The scape is flattened, sometimes with small wings of the edges. Each of the flowers has stamens about equal to the petals in length. It only has two leaves per scape, these being flat, thick, and scythe shaped.
Plant out in autumn before the ground freezes. Sow stored seeds in early spring in a shallow tray or another suitable container in a mixture of equal parts loam, peat, and sand. Push the seeds lightly below the surface of the growing medium and keep it moist. It is best to place them in a cool place with indirect sunlight because the seeds need a chilling period to germinate. The seedlings can be transplanted outdoors when the danger of frost has passed.
