Spreading Dogbane
Apocynum androsaemifolium
zones 3-5
50 seeds
Spreading Dogbane, is a fragrant, pink-flowering plant in the Gentianales order. The plant is common in North America and is widespread across most of the United States and Canada, and in Alaska, California, and northeast Mexico. Once established, this plant tends to spread from underground rhizomes and form distinct patches. It is found in a variety of habitats, from native plant communities to weedy roadsides and waste areas.
To sow, it is preferable to mix the seed with some sand or fine soil and scatter directly in a prepared growing site during early autumn. Lightly sprinkle the ground and gently pat the soil to lightly compact. Then let nature take over.
For stored seed, sow in early spring in a shallow tray or another suitable container in a mixture of equal parts loam, peat, and sand. Push the seeds lightly below the surface of the growing medium and keep it moist. It is best to place them in a cool place with indirect sunlight because the seeds need a chilling period to germinate.
The seedlings can be transplanted outdoors when the danger of frost has passed.
