Showy Milkweed has a long bloom period and is host/nectar plant for monarchs. Asclepias speciosa is a native milkweed for the western half of the US and Canada. It grows about 3 feet high, and features large oval leaves, and spiky, richly fragrant, pink flower clusters atop thick stems. In addition to the Monarch butterfly, bees and hummingbirds love Showy Milkweed.

Direct sowing seeds in autumn brings the most success. As long as you experience temperatures of 40 degrees F or below for a good part of the winter.  Start from seeds indoors about 6-8 weeks before the last predicted frost. Sow the seeds in normal potting soil, and put the plant in a warm, sunny location. In about 14-21 days, the seeds will begin to germinate.
