Showy Death Camas is a toxic species of flowering plant known by the common names Foothill Death Camas and Sand-Corn. It is widely distributed across much of the western United States, especially in the mountains and deserts of the Great Basin region west of the Rocky Mountains. It grows in many types of habitat, including sagebrush plateau, grasslands, forests, and woodlands.
Sow seeds in mid-autumn in prepared garden bed to 1/8th of an inch deep covering with a mixture of peat and well-rotted compost. Seeds germinate in the spring after chilling or freezing over the winter. Alternatively, sow seeds in small individual pots and stratify in a garage or other cold place over winter. Keep soil moist but not wet. Seeds should sprout in the spring. Set pots out after chance of last frost. Keep out of direct sunlight. When seedlings are 4-5 inches tall, plant out in prepared garden area.
