Many-flowered Shooting Star is a species of pink flowering plant recently reclassified into the Primula family. It is native to the western United States and goes by a variety of (sometimes conflicting) common names. Leaves form a basal rosette, and singular flower stalks emerge in spring reaching a height of up to 16”. The sprays of distinctive swept-back deep pinkish-lavender petals (resembling tiny cyclamen blossoms) give this flower its common name of “shooting star”. Dodecatheon pulchellum has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

The plants are hardy down to -15 degrees F.  They prefer a moist, sheltered location in partial shade with neutral or acid soil in a moist woodland setting.

Seeds should first be sown onto flats. Sink the flat into the ground in an area that offers shade, preferably close to a wall that faces north. Provide a glass or plastic covering. Keep soil moist. Seeds take from 1-6 months to germinate. After 2 years, transplant the seedlings in their final location in autumn.
