Prostrate Ceanothus
Ceanothus prostratum
zones 2-4
25 seeds
Prostrate Ceanothus is found ranging in Washington, Oregon, Western Idaho, Western Nevada and south into Northern California. It grows in the understory of mixed conifer forests from foothills to subalpine areas. It also inhabits open flats and ridges in areas of low chaparral as well as dry interior forest ecosystems. It can be found from elevations ranging between 1,000 feet to 7,000 feet above sea level.
This mat-forming shrub is generally less than 10 inches tall and spreading laterally to up to 10 inches. Its evergreen leaves are oppositely arranged and generally oval in shape with 3-9 sharp teeth along the margins. The umbel-like flowers are blue, purple, or lavender and bloom between April and June. Its fruit is small and rounded with horned lobes.
It takes some dedication to propagate by seed. Sow seed directly in prepared growing area in autumn. For propagating stored seed, boil in water 1/2 minute, cooling immediately, followed 154 days cold stratification. Alternately soak 30 minutes in concentrated H2 S04, then 2 months cold stratification.
