Nuttall's Larkspur
Delphinium nuttallianum
zones 2-7
50 seeds
Nuttall’s Larkspur is found in valleys, foothills, dry ridges, and sagebrush flats. It is a low plant (usually 6-12” high) with 3-parted leaves. The leaves are mostly basal and are round in outline but greatly dissected. This Larkspur has blue or blue-violet flowers about 1 inch wide. Sepals and petals are both colored, and the upper sepal is prolonged into a slender, tubular spur that protrudes from the flower. It takes about 3-7 years for Larkspur to flower for the first time.
The seed has a limited viability so it should be stored in a sealed container at about 3°C (temperatures above 15°C inhibit germination). Sow seed in March or April in a cold frame or plant outdoors in May. Keep moist and in a shady position until germination takes place. The seed usually germinates in 2-9 weeks at 15°C. When plants are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out into their permanent positions in the summer. Larkspur likes well-drained, gravelly soil; it dislikes water-logged soils. Divide in spring or early autumn.
