Evergreen Kittentails
Synthyris platycarpa
zones 3-5
35 seeds
A clump-forming, evergreen perennial with ovate to rounded leaves with toothed margins. Flowering stems to 13 inches tall appear in spring bearing up to 35 loosely clustered, bell-shaped, blue to purple flowers, each up to 3/4 of an inch long. Plants bloom from early May through June and are found at elevations around 6,000 feet.
Grow in moist but well-drained, acidic or neutral soil in full sun or partial shade. It is best to sow the seeds in autumn in prepared garden area. Stored seeds should be kept in dry conditions just below room temperature. Germination rates decrease with seed age with diminished germination success after four years of storage. No stratification is needed. Sow seeds in the late spring directly in prepared growing area (with full sun or partial shade) approximately 1/8 of an inch deep. Pat gently and water area daily with gentle sprinkling.
Germination takes between 3 and 5 weeks.
