Calochortus elegans is a species of flowering plant in the lily family. It is native to the western United States from northern California to Montana. One to two four-five inch basal leaves stay green through flowering. Upward facing flower average two to four, blooming intermittently. Petals are greenish white to pale lavender-white with a purple crescent near base. Blossoms have long straight hairs along edges except for hairless pointed tips. These small delicate flowers grow in open, rocky soils at edges of forests at mid-high elevations.
Sow in late summer or early autumn in prepared bed, or early spring in a cold frame in a very well-draining medium. Stratification is helpful. Providing an atmosphere which hovers around 32°F during moist stratification of seeds will achieve good results. Place the seeds in moistened vermiculite in a ziploc bag, and transplant them to a cold frame when they germinate. This process usually takes about six weeks, but some of the seeds may take longer. Keep geminated seeds around 60 degrees F. Leave the seedlings undisturbed for their first two years growth but give them an occasional liquid feed to ensure they do not become nutrient deficient.
