Deerhorn Clarkia
Clarkia pulchella
75 seeds
Clarkia pulchella, also known as Pink Fairies and Ragged Robin, gets its name from the shape of its flowers which range in colors from white to shades of pink. The distinctive lavender to light purple flowers are four-lobed and fused at the base. Each lobe is in turn three-lobed with the middle lobe widest. Deerhorn Clarkia is found in the Pacific Northwest (mainly east of the Cascade Range) in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, the southern margin of British Columbia, and the extreme west of Montana. Occurring over a wide range of elevations, it is most common from 2,000-5,000 feet. Its habitat is often forests and rocky hillsides. The genus name commemorates William Clark of the Lewis & Clark Expedition.
Sow seeds in mid-autumn in prepared garden bed to 1/8th of an inch deep covering with a mixture peat and well-rotted compost. Seeds germinate in the spring after chilling or freezing over the winter. Alternatively, sow seeds in small individual pots and stratify in a garage or other cold place over winter. Keep soil moist but not wet. Seeds should sprout in the spring. Set pots out after chance of last frost. Keep out of direct sunlight. When seedlings are three to four inches tall, plant out in prepared garden area.
