Cutleaf Balsamroot is a North American species in the sunflower tribe within the aster family. It is native to the northwestern United States, in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, and Oregon. Balsamorhiza macrophylla is an herb up to 40 inches tall. It has yellow flower heads, usually borne one at a time, with both ray florets and disc florets. The species grows in sagebrush scrublands and conifer forests.
Plant from seed during the autumn or early spring in a cultivated and contained bed, such as a deep, vented herb container. The soil must be allowed to drain since too much moisture rots the roots. Allow Cutleaf Balsamroot one foot of space. Use sandy, loamy and clay soils of acid, neutral or base pH levels, but make sure the soil is gravelly. A mix of 1 part soil, 1 part sand and 1 part small gravel would be an excellent mix.
Choose a location that receives direct sunlight for most of the day. Since this species grows naturally in rocky foothills and needs only about 15-30 inches of rainfall per year, do not over water. In most regions regular rainfall is sufficient.
