Grindelia squarrosa

zones 3-6

50 seeds

These sticky perennials have smooth stems averaging 2-3 feet tall. The leaves are ½-5 inches long and lance-shaped with toothed margins. The half-inch disk flower heads have outer rows of small yellow ray flowers. The flowers are resinous. Gumweed is a source of grindelia, a spasmodic used commercially to stimulate the mucous membranes in the treatment of chronic bronchitis and asthma.

The best way to plant Gumweed seed is directly in the prepared area.  Alternately, sow seed in a greenhouse in the spring or sow directly into the garden after the soil has warmed up. Gumweed needs moderate water to germinate and almost no water during its flowering stage.
