American bistort is one of the most common species found in mountain meadows throughout the West. Its most common habitats are wet meadows, swamps, around seeps, in moist openings in the timber. It is found at elevations from 2,000 feet to 13,000 feet. Dense white or pale pink flowers cluster at the top of slender stems. Flowers are in spike-like terminal racemes with many flowers. The spike is 1 ½-2 inches long and ½-1 inch wide.
Seeds are best sown in the autumn directly outdoors into garden of fine soil. The minute seed should be mixed with potting soil, then broadcast onto the prepared area and gently water in. Stored seeds will need cold stratification for 3-4 months and sown as early as possible in the spring. Germination, especially of stored seed, is slow. Plants will not flower until the second or third year.
