Mountain Pennyroyal
Monardella odoratissima
(also known as Mountain coyote mint, Cloverhead horsemint, False horsemint, Mountain beebalm, Western mountain balm)
zones 4-6
35 seeds
This small member of the mint family is highly variable, both in its naming and in its attributes! Western Pennyroyal rarely grows more than a foot high. In early summer, the tips of the stems are covered with lavender or purple flower tufts. Foliage is variable but tends towards a greyish-green and short, fuzzy hairs. This perennial plant will retain last season’s growth through the winter months, providing winter interest and valuable habitat for over-wintering critters. American Pennyroyal is highly aromatic, resembling a cross between citrus, mint, and camphor. Traditionally, the scent of this herb is said to repel insects and is often used in herbal insect repellents.
American Pennyroyal blooms from June through September and attracts many pollinators, especially butterflies. It prefers dry slopes and rocky banks ranging from lower elevations to well-into the mountains. Deer and rabbit resistant.
Sprinkle the small seeds on the surface of a flat, and water very gently. Transplant the seedlings 6” apart in a sunny garden spot.
